Microbial interactions and post-harvest pathology of karonda (Carissa carandas): Challenges and opportunities in rural agro-economies
Author(s): John R Kato Nyang'oro
Abstract: Karonda (
Carissa carandas) is a widely cultivated fruit in rural agro-economies, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. While it is valued for its medicinal properties and nutritional benefits, post-harvest losses due to microbial infections pose significant challenges. This study explores the microbial interactions responsible for post-harvest diseases in Karonda and the impact these have on its storage and marketability. It further discusses the economic implications of these challenges and provides insights into potential solutions, focusing on integrated management strategies, microbial control, and post-harvest handling practices. The findings offer practical recommendations for improving the post-harvest quality and economic viability of Karonda in rural farming communities.
