Nutritional profiles and phytochemicals of sausage tree (Kigelia Africana) and moringa (Moringa oleifera) at Africa University, Zimbabwe

Abstract: This study examined the nutritional profiles and phytochemicals of the sausage tree (Kigelia Africana) and moringa (Moringa oleifera), which grow well in subtropical and tropical climates and are valued for their health benefits. Both plants are rich in phytochemicals with various health-promoting properties, commonly in the treatment of various health issues like cancer, skin problems, and fungal infections. The research aimed to assess their nutritional and medicinal value for humans and animals. Samples from their dried leaves, pods, and seeds were analyzed for nutrients like fat, fiber, and protein using various laboratory techniques, including atomic absorption spectrophotometry and the Kjeldahl method. The findings revealed that M. oleifera leaves are particularly rich, with notable levels of ash, dry matter, and protein. Its seeds had high fat content but lower protein. K. africana also showed considerable nutritional value in its leaves, seeds, and fruits. These plants are rich in essential minerals like calcium and iron, which support important body functions. Pharmacological investigations confirmed the anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, and anticancer activity of the extract of different parts of the plants. Overall, the study suggests these plants could help address malnutrition, health, and business opportunities.
