Effect of Synergistic bioinoculation with Frankia in bioactive secondary metabolites production of Elaeagnus latifolia L. seedlings

Author(s): Liza Handique and Vipin Parkash

Abstract: The study investigated the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (Glomus mosseae), non-AM fungus (Trichoderma harzianum, Th-13), and bacteria (Frankia sp.) in secondary metabolites production of Elaeagnus latifolia L. seedlings. The seedlings were inoculated and the biochemical metabolites were analyzed, revealing compounds like alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, and lignin. Quantitative estimations of metabolites were also conducted and antioxidant activity were studied using DPPH and hydrogen peroxide assays. The maximum phenolic content was obtained in the ethanolic extracts of Fs-01 (227±0.025 mg/g) treated seedlings and the maximum flavonoid content was obtained in Fs-01 (75.00±0.025 mg/g). Analyses of the free radical scavenging activity (DPPH) revealed that, the highest % inhibition activity was showed by Fs-04 treatment (88.8±0.01). Similarly, scavenging of hydrogen peroxide of different extracts of E. latifolia root were also observed. The maximum % inhibition was depicted by Fs-04 treatment (73.1±0.01).
