Impact of temperature and light conditions on growth of Colletotrichum species

Author(s): Shinde Jayshri Uttamrao

Abstract: This study investigates the impact of temperature and light conditions on the growth of five Colletotrichum species: Colletotrichum coccodes, Colletotrichum capsici, Colletotrichum orbiculare, Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The fungi were incubated at six temperatures (4 °C, 10 °C, 20 °C, 28 °C, 37 °C, 50 °C) and exposed to light durations of 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours, with a 12-hour light/dark cycle as the control. Results indicated that 28 °C was optimal for growth, while extreme temperatures inhibited development. In light duration experiments, the highest mycelial weights were observed under 120 hours of continuous light, though overall growth was lower than control conditions. These findings highlight the importance of environmental conditions in regulating Colletotrichum growth, offering insights for effective disease management strategies in agriculture.
