Assessment of genetic diversity in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) accessions

Author(s): Chirag D Chaudhary, JM Patel, DR Chaudhary and YN Patel

Abstract: D2 analysis was studied for yield and its component characters in 45 wheat genotypes using Mahalanobis D2 statistic (1936) as described by Rao (1952). D2 analysis indicated wider genetic diversity among 45 genotypes of wheat, which were grouped into twelve clusters. Maximum intra cluster distance was observed for cluster VI (7.12), whereas maximum inter cluster distance was observed between cluster II and XII (15.94). The clustering pattern indicated that geographic diversity was not associated with genetic diversity. The genotypes belonging to the clusters separated by high genetic distance could be used in hybridization programme for obtaining a wide spectrum of variation among the segregants.
